The population of Chandigarh Urban Complex (CUC) comprising Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula has been growing fast at a rate of over 5% per year in the last decade. There has been a phenomenal growth in the population of vehicles as well especially the two and four wheelers in this period and their rising use due to rising household incomes. Chandigarh has the highest per capita income in the country. Besides nearby towns are also growing fast and have large traffic interaction with the Chandigarh. In the absence of adequate and quality mass transport system, people are using the personalized modes which is not only leading to congestion on road network but also increasing environmental pollution.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed among the Governments of Haryana and Punjab, and Chandigarh Administration for the formation of Greater Chandigarh Transport Corporation (GCTC) on Thursday for developing a comprehensive integrated multi-modal urban and suburban commuting system for the Union Territory and surrounding areas in the states of Haryana and Punjab. Also the administration has been working to develop cycling tracks all over the city.

However the citizen participation is very much required to frame a integrated and detailed urban mobility plan for “City Beautiful”. So, the Chandigarh Administration hereby invites ideas, views, opinion and suggestions from the residents so that the objective of “Smart Urban Solutions” could be achieved.

Metro is a good option and would be perfect for the tricity as the distances are very long. However the city is known for its beauty and greenery and open spaces. These things should not be compromised for while building the metro. All the tracks should be built underground without disturbing the city planning.

Most impotant would be keeping the metro under the ground and building underpasses or double underparsses at busy intersections and round abouts. Underpasses are concrete structures which go through the surface and once completed restore the beauty of the surrounding above it, while simuntaneously improving traffic conditions as vehicles go straight under without stoping or destroying the cities beauty unlike metros and flyovers which are NOTunderground therefore underpasses etc r viably options

Regarding Transportion and movement of people in the region, following thoughts are being shared and i hope you would succeed in improving lives of people * Mass transportion link to Patiala, Baddi or any other major nearby townships, It can be train link or metro or some other. It should be able to reduce great burden on roads, making the travel safe and comfortable. *Study to find points where there is regular jam and widening the roads, slip roads. eg roundabout near hallomajra chauk

Underground Metro might be the most viable solution as it will provide shelter and comfort in the harsh weathers Chandigarh faces. Cycles and two wheelers would not be a very successful idea as far as mass participation. The cost of constructing a metro and the time it will take is the biggest deterrent, solution to that would be tax people with the highest per capita income in the country.

Govt. should promote single wheel electric portable bike/cycle. It can be used once you get down from train or bus stop to travel within cities. It will save lot of energy. It can be carried in a small bag and kept in office / home etc. Their care many products around the world, one of it is - Eg Solowheel http://solowheel.com/product/xtreme

Undoubtedly metro is the solution for mass transportation. Since it will cater to some limited routes, it would be worthwhile to have elevated roads in some sections like in Delhi, which may to large extend help in decongesting the traffic.
