A rapid increase can lead to quality problems. Employers may be persuaded to participate without being fully aware of their responsibilities.Completion rates may be low unless quality is properly managed.Rapid establishment in new occupational areas without a tradition of formal training can lead to the risk of low-quality qualifications and workplace curriculum which can be hard to shift later – leading either to persistent negative perceptions of the occupation and theapprenticeship.

India’s current apprenticeship scheme allows 2.5%0-15% of the organisations’ total workforce to be apprentices and firms with 30 or more employees have to mandatory hire apprentices. Under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme, the company pays 75% while the government contributes 25% to the cost of stipend for each apprentice.

In India, less than 0.1% of the employed workforce or just 0.3 million people are apprentices. In comparison, the UK has 1.5% or 0.5 million, China has 2.5% or 20 million, and Germany has 5% or 2.5 million apprentices. This is compared to nearly six million youth that enter India’s workforce every year.
