Silk, the Queen of textiles, is adored by all for its sheer sheen, luster, elegance, class and comfort. It has several natural properties like natural sheen, inherent affinity for dyes and vibrant colours, light weight, resilience and excellent drape etc. which makes it distinct from all other fibers both natural and man-made. Though silk products are consumed more by urban rich, its production is highly employment oriented, low capital intensive and remunerative that churns out value added products of economic importance, especially the rural people.

India is the second largest producer of silk in the world and the silk industry provides employment to about 7.8 million people in the rural and semi-urban areas in the country. The women participation in various activities in silk value chain is about 54%. The silk always attracts competition from synthetic fibers, though which look like silk.

Share your ideas and opinions on how to increase the demand for Indian silk in the country as well as abroad by exploring new products, designs, markets, fashion, trends, promotion measures, target groups, etc.

1. Re-assess actual output of silk production: incl. non-mulberry silks; present statistics available are unrealistic. 3100 MT. of eri silk is not visible. We being the main eri silk product manufacturer, cannot find even 100 MT of eri silk per year; despite huge demand. 2.Planning 2 increase demand should start only after knowing what we actually have! 3.Design, diversify the products 2 target the mass, with blends 2 make affordable. 4.Link Handloom & silk for sustainability of both.

When a product becomes expensive due to middlemen or value addition by the Textile Industry, it goes out of reach of masses and at the same time its benefit is not passed to silk producers. Encourage and make schemes so that small silk manufactures also make trendy/fashionable silk blended fabric. because of value addition it will be sold comparatively cheaper and silk manufacturers will also get better realization.

There is trend/demand for blended silk--pure silk yarn blended with other natural yarns like cotton, rayon, linen, natural fabric from banana, pine, coconut etc.-- which gives more comfort in temperate climate. A study/research be undertaken to develop different types of silk base fabric to attract consumers because pure silk is expensive & considered the material for elite class. Make the silk affordable and comfortable for mass consumers.

Sir, silver / gold thread work is very typical of Eastern fabrics, of which various Indian Silks have a significant presence. These are routinely used by large design houses in the West. We have to have regional centers that train artisans along side the traditional weavers & artisans who can receive input regarding designs, textures. These centers can also act as marketing arms, sourcing raw material and completed products. Zari availability & quality needs serious attention though.

Sir, silk as a fabric is used by all fashion houses, variously - for dresses, stoles, shawls, hats, ties and also for bags & accessories. What is required is standardisation of quality to meet the needs of foreign design houses, improved yarn quality, "zero defect", improved designs and colors which appeal to the Western palate. It will be beneficial to have a separate silk promotion board bridging design houses, large stores to the local weavers.

Please include the small famous fashion designers and textile industries business man because they have big ideas and lack of finance so they can not increase their business
