Democracy has always been deeply rooted in India’s civilizational values. From ancient sabhas and samitis to local village decision-making, the idea of collective governance and freedom of thought has long shaped the Indian way of life. However, this democratic tradition faced a serious threat during the Emergency imposed on June 25, 1975—a period marked by the suspension of civil liberties, press censorship, and the curbing of constitutional rights.

To mark the 50th anniversary of this critical chapter in India’s history, the Government of India has declared June 25 as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’, a reminder to safeguard the values enshrined in our Constitution. As part of this observance, Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the MyGov, invites citizens to share personal or family stories, reflections, and memories related to the Emergency period.

Submissions can include lived experiences, oral histories, or even thoughts passed down through generations. Entries can be in the form of a PDF, image (JPEG/JPG/PNG), or video link (with public access), helping document this important time in India’s democratic journey.
