The population of Chandigarh Urban Complex (CUC) comprising Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula has been growing fast at a rate of over 5% per year in the last decade. There has been a phenomenal growth in the population of vehicles as well especially the two and four wheelers in this period and their rising use due to rising household incomes. Chandigarh has the highest per capita income in the country. Besides nearby towns are also growing fast and have large traffic interaction with the Chandigarh. In the absence of adequate and quality mass transport system, people are using the personalized modes which is not only leading to congestion on road network but also increasing environmental pollution.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed among the Governments of Haryana and Punjab, and Chandigarh Administration for the formation of Greater Chandigarh Transport Corporation (GCTC) on Thursday for developing a comprehensive integrated multi-modal urban and suburban commuting system for the Union Territory and surrounding areas in the states of Haryana and Punjab. Also the administration has been working to develop cycling tracks all over the city.

However the citizen participation is very much required to frame a integrated and detailed urban mobility plan for “City Beautiful”. So, the Chandigarh Administration hereby invites ideas, views, opinion and suggestions from the residents so that the objective of “Smart Urban Solutions” could be achieved.

The income of people in Chandigarh is rising but this does not mean they should spend their money in buying cars. Such an atmosphere needs to be created where possessing greater number of cars is seen as "Bad Thing" and not as status symbol. People having more than two cars should be deprived of several facilities.

Mono Rail in Chandigarh would be a great help in curbing vehicular congestion. Waste disposal and recycling garbage is another challenge. Chandigarh is green city and its vastness as well as openness attracts everyone. Both sides of the roads connecting Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula should be lined up with fruit or flower bearing trees and this task may be given to private nurseries on renewable contract basis. This will bring greenery and increase production of fruits thus generating jobs.

To make Chandigarh smart city, smart development steps should be adopted like wifi facility, biodegradable mobile toilets, use of solar energy, 'one family one tree' scheme.....

#Chandigarh, #UT, #UrbanMobility, #Transport, #MyGov: An average of 50 tonnes of waste plastic is generated daily in chandhigarh. If we can collect the same and converted into gas / diesel, 400 transported buses can operate free of cost in the city. Is that not an echievement? Or we can generate 6 Mw electric power daily.
