With challenges of rapid urbanisation ahead and the promise to conserve the green heritage of “City Beautiful”, Chandigarh Administration is always committed to create a clean and healthy environment for its resident, commuters & tourists. Eco-friendly & sustainable technologies will be focus of city under “Smart City Mission”.

As per the “Rank of Cities on Sanitation 2009-2010” Report (issued by Ministry of Urban Development, GoI) Chandigarh emerged as the cleanest city in India, with a rating of 73.48 points followed by Mysore in the second place with 70.65 points. However the Administration still strives for more better & effective solutions on sanitation and cleanliness which should come directly from its residents. The citizen consultation will give an important insight of the requirements& aspirations of the residents for Sanitation & Cleanliness Plan of Chandigarh.

So, the Chandigarh Administration hereby invites ideas, views, opinion and suggestions from the residents so that the objective of “Smart Sanitation & Cleanliness Solutions” could be achieved.

At the institution level, garbage bins of different colors should be installed at convenient and easily accessible places. A person is less likely to litter the ground if he/she spots a garbage bin nearby. This is easier to implement at the institution level, but it should be replicated slowly by the UT administration also. Install colored garbage bins near all public utilities (ATMs, washrooms, bus stands). Print a hotline number on all garbage cans so people can report damaged/overused ones.

Garbage problem is acute that garbage bags should be provied to residents with no profit basis by MC OR GARBAGE Collecting persons and on alternate day garbage should be collected from door steps of residents by the garbage collecting staff

UT may consider giving complete job from garbage pickup to processing to pvt contractors. All the infrastructure ie providing standard closed bins(diff colours for garbage segregation) at various locations, closed pickup vans with robatic arms to pickup bins & wash them. Local rehari garbage should be part of the chain. Garbage pickup charges charges according to the size of house should be made a part monthly water bill. Contractors with MC staff must take care of pilferage of bins.

1) As compared to Europe etc, Chandigarh has very less number of litter boxes. More garbage boxes shud be installed. 2) Install a set of 3 boxes at every point, to receive the segregated waste i)Bio-degradable ii) plastic iii)others 3) Garbage pickup by Administration needs to be more efficient. 4)Schools shud be given tasks to motivate citizens and residents' societies. Posters competitions, debates, stage shows etc will lead to cleanliness awareness in every house hold thru children.
